Der Tapgol-Park ist der erste moderne Park, der in Seoul gebaut wurde, und liegt dort, wo sich einst der Tempel Wongaksa aus der Joseon-Zeit befand. Unter der Herrschaft von König Yeongsangun und Jungjong, die eine Unterdrückungspolitik des Buddhismus verfolgten, wurde der Tempel zertstört.
John McLeavy Brown, der am koreanischen Hofe als Ratgeber tätig war, machte den Vorschlag, einen Park nach westlichem Vorbild auf der Tempelanlage zu errichten. Innerhalb des Parks befinden sich mehrere Nationalschätze, darunter die siebenstöckige Steinpagode der Tempelanlage Wongaksa, das Denkmal Wongasabi und der Pavillon Palgakjeong, wo die koreanische Unabhängigkeit von Japan erklärt wurde.
