Die Geschichte des Seoul Plaza begann 1897, als der damalige König Gojong nach seinem Exil im russischen Konsulat in den Palast Deoksugung zurückkehrte und sich zum Kaiser krönen ließ. Er baute Straßen, die vom Palast sternförmig wegführen, aus und legte vor dem Haupttor des Palastes einen Platz an. Dieser wurde anschließend Schauplatz wichtiger historischer Ereignisse wie der Unabhängigkeitsbewegung vom 1. März 1919, der Aprilrevolution 1960 und den Demonstrationen für die Demokratisierung im Juni 1987. 2002 strömten hier wieder die Menschen zusammen, um während der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft gemeinsam die Spiele der koreanischen Nationalmannschaft zu sehen.
