La reine Munjeong est une figure féminine hautement respectée dans l’Histoire coréenne. Conduite par des ambitions politiques, elle assassina son beau-fils afin de faire de son propre fils le roi, élimina des adversaires politiques, puis géra les affaires de l’Etat pendant près de huit années. Elle a maintenu un pouvoir absolu sur le royaume alors que l’inégalité entre les hommes et les femmes et les discriminations envers ces dernières perduraient sous la dynastie Joseon. Le tombeau royal Taereung abrite le monticule funéraire de la reine Munjeong.

Ce tombeau est un lieu agréable pour la promenade mais aussi pour découvrir une des facettes de la dynastie Joseon. Dès que l’on entre sur les lieux après avoir franchi une petite forêt, il est possible d’apercevoir une porte rouge (la couleur rouge signifie la sainteté) avec le symbole du yin et du yang. Les deux allées de pierres menant au bâtiment principal valent le détour car ces deux allées ont été construites respectivement pour la défunte reine et pour le peuple vivant. Les rites de commémoration étaient accomplis dans le bâtiment principal alors que les petites sculptures d’animaux sur le toit, les « Japsang », étaient censées exorciser les esprits maléfiques. Les autres sculptures telles que les moutons, les tigres, les chevaux et les militaires encerclant le tombeau ont un rôle de gardiens pour la défunte reine. Le tombeau royal Taerung est devenu célèbre après qu’une série télévisée, « Munjeong Wanghu », fut tournée sur les lieux.

Korea Samgyetang serves up delicious samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) made using only 4-year-old ginseng cultivated in Geumsan (a town famous for its ginseng) and chickens raised on local farms. Young chickens (no more than 49 days old) are butchered and delivered fresh daily, making for only the tenderest meat. The chicken is boiled with high-quality ginseng, dates, garlic, glutinous rice, and various medicinal herbs to make a flavorful and energizing soup.
