Geumsusan Mountain, originally called Baegamsan Mountain, was renamed by noted Joseon-period scholar Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye) when he was the chief governor of Danyang County, saying its graceful features matched the fineness of silk embroidery. The mountain is beautiful throughout the year with bright foliage in fall and an ice cave that stays frozen until early April. The view from the summit of the mountain resembles a pregnant woman lying on her side, and there is a legend that women who pray for a son here will have their wish come true.

Located in Jucheon-myeon, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon Province, Jogyeondang (House of Kim Jong-gil) is a traditional “hanok” stay. The nine rooms of the house follow the traditional “hanok” format. Anchae, the inner building with nearly 200 years of history, is dignified and elegant as befitting of its age. The majestic rafters of the building were built from 800-year-old trees, and the “daecheongmaru” raised floor has a sheen from years of care. Sarangchae and Byeolchae, restored in 2007 and 2009, respectively, make up for their relative lack of historical weight with freshness and convenience. The Inner Sarangchae faces the Anchae and the courtyard, while the Outer Sarangchae connects to a space with floor tables, cushions, and bookcases for drinking tea or reading. Guests staying in the three rooms in the Outer Sarangchae and the Anchae Geonneonbang rooms must use a shared bathroom, while other rooms come with private bathrooms. The uniqueness of Jogyeondang lies in its extensive cultural program, which ranges from tea ceremonies to soirees in the historical building. The complex’s manager has many stories to tell about the history of the house and its construction. Breakfast is also available upon reservation and payment, and English and Chinese services are provided for international visitors.

Two hundred meters upstream from Dodamsambong Peaks is a large rainbow-shaped stone gate on the left side of the river. This oddly-shaped stone arch is called Seongmun, which means Stone Gate. Due to its fascinating scenery, Seongmunm is the second of Danyang’s Eight Scenic Beauties. To the left of the Stone Gate is a small cave. Inside the cave is Okdap (Stone Field), which is believed to have been cultivated by an old enchantress. The legend of Okdap says that an old enchantress who lived in heaven once came to the earth to get water and then dropped her binyeo (traditional Korean hairpin) near Seongmun. As she searched for her binyeo, she was extremely impressed by the beautiful views. Mesmerized, she left heaven and lived near Seongmun as an ordinary peasant, growing crops and expanding farmlands.

Dodamsambong Peaks refer to a trio of rocks that jut as islands in the upper Namhangang River. The trio is often considered one of the most beautiful tourist sites in Danyang. Indeed, many prominent characters from Korean history have sung its praise. Because it is located in the middle of the river, it can be seen from a distance, but a motorboat service allows visitors to get closer to the peaks. The ride takes about 10 minutes.
◎ Travel information to meet Hallyu’s charm
Dodamsambong Peaks have been featured in both “2 Days & 1 Night” and “IDOL 1N2D.” The scenery is so breathtaking that the peaks are considered one of Danyang’s Eight Scenic Views. For a leisurely experience, take a cruise boat like the “2 Days & 1 Night” cast, or, for a bit more excitement, hop on a motorboat as ENHYPEN did in “IDOL 1N2D.”
