Le siège social du centre mondial de Taekwondo a établi ses bureaux à Séoul (Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu) le 30 novembre 1972 et a tenu les premiers championnats du monde de Taekwondo du 25 au 27 mai 1973. Le 28 mai, de la même année, la fédération mondiale de Taekwondo fut créée.
