Les rochers Gatbawi sont composés d’un rocher central et d’un rocher 'satgat', en forme de chapeau en bamboo conique. Lorsqu’on voit le rocher satgat, on l’appelle souvent « rocher central » ou « rocher satgat ». Les rochers gatbawi (du côté de la mer) ressemblent à deux moines coiffés de satgat, et on raconte que le rocher central aurait abrité un éminent ermite taoïste.

Il existe de nombreuses légendes autour des rochers Gatbawi. L’une d’entre elles raconte qu’un grand moine taoïste traversa la rivière Yeongsangang en voulant se rendre à Dakseom, Nabuldo. Il s’arrêta quelques instants pour se reposer et l’endroit où il avait déposé sa canne et son satgat devint le rocher Gatbawi. On raconte également qu’un grand taoïste vivant sur le mont Wolchulsan pour perfectionner sa voie se rendit à Mokpo avec son disciple pour y acheter quelques objets. Il traversa la rivière Yongsangang en utilisant une méthode de compression de l’espace, mais son disciple échoua à utiliser la même méthode et se retrouva changé en pierre. Une dernière légende parle d’un jeune homme travailleur et courageux qui vivait à Mokpo il y a très longtemps avec son père malade. Le jeune homme quitta la maison pour gagner l’argent nécessaire pour acheter les médicaments de son père. Ce dernier mourut, faute de soins. De retour chez lui, le jeune homme comprit sa stupidité, et le coeur empli de regrets, passa des jours et des années à jeûner et à prier pour obtenir le pardon, son satgat sur la tête, et fut transformé en pierre.
