This Soyanggang Maiden Statue stands high between Soyanggang Skywalk and Soyang i(2)gyo Bridge. This statue, representing Korea’s popular song Soyanggang Cheonyeo (maiden), is 12 m high in total, combining 5 m-high base stone and 7 m-high body. If you see it close to, the statue looks very big. The statue depicts a maiden who holds her skirt hem with one hand and reed with the other, and her breast-knot flapping in the wind. The base stone has the inscription of lyrics. The lyrics belong to the song Soyanggang Cheonyeo composed by Ban Ya-wol, who left hit songs, such as Crossing the Teary Pass of Bakdaljae, and Brokenhearted Miari Ridge.

Soyanggang Skywalk (소양강스카이워크)

The Soyanggang Skywalk, extending over the river, spans 174 meters in length, with a transparent glass floor covering 156 meters of its section. At the end of the skywalk, visitors will find a circular plaza and an observatory, renowned for their panoramic views, especially of the sunsets. Additionally, the Ssogarisang sculpture, depicting a leopard mandarin fish, stands on the opposite side of the plaza, drawing in visitors. Water from a fountain flows from this sculpture at fixed intervals, adding to the allure.

Located next to Uiamho Lake, KT&G Sangsangmadang Chuncheon is a cultural space that combines “art” and “stay,” and Sangsangmadang Chuncheon Stay is a space pertaining to the latter. Housed in a remodeled former Gangwon Sports Hall building, it features a quirky exterior and tasteful interior design. Ivory-colored walls, white duck-down bedding, and brown furniture blend in seamlessly with orange or light green highlights. The management’s attentiveness is made evident in the temperature control in each room and the variety of bed arrangements for greater choice. The first floor of the building has a restaurant specializing in chicken dishes, and guests also have the choice of cooking their own food in the communal kitchen equipped with an induction stove, microwave oven, refrigerator, and cooking utensils. There are even music practice and performance rooms for artists. The surrounding area exemplifies the beauty of Chuncheon’s lakeside nature, best explored with bicycles. Opened in 2002, Chuncheon National Museum was established to identify and promote the original form and characteristics of the regional culture of Gangwon-do. It consists of the Permanent Exhibition Hall, Brand Hall, Special Exhibition Hall, and Outdoor Exhibition space. The museum displays the artifacts based on Gangwon-do’s history and culture, ranging from prehistoric times to modern times, and holds a special exhibition with diverse themes. The main building of the museum, built in harmony with nature, was selected as the “Best Architecture of the Year” by the Korean Institute of Architects in 2003. In particular, the main building is known for the center hall equipped with a circular glass ceiling. The Museum Cafe is situated at this center hall where visitors take a rest while enjoying the sunlight through the ceiling. The Immersive Digital Cafe has been in service on the 2nd floor of the center hall since the end of 2020. It shows a beautiful and vivid video of the Eight Sights of Gwandong, Five Hundred Arhats at Changnyeongsa Temple Site, and other sites on its 28 m-wide screen. Its Children’s Museum was also newly opened in 2021 under the theme “Children & Nature.”

KT&G Sangsangmadang (KT&G 상상마당 춘천)

Embracing Uiamho Lake, KT&G Sangsangmadang Chuncheon is a cultural complex that consists of the Art Center and the Stay building. The Art Center was established by remodeling the previous Chuncheon Children’s Center, while the Stay building was built by remodeling the previous Gangwon-do Sports Center. With an open view of the lake at the front, the Art Center is known for its construction design by Korea’s master architect, late Kim Swoo-geun. When viewed from the sky, the Art Center, which was built with Kim’s unique construction technique, resembles a butterfly sitting on the lakeside. Opened as the Children’s Center in 1980, the building was abandoned for a while and then was re-born as KT&G Sangsangmadang Chuncheon in 2014. Sangsangmadang, as part of the social contribution and restoration program of KT&G, aims to support various cultural and arts activities and offer the public an opportunity to appreciate arts and culture. While keeping its original frame of the construction in consideration of its architectural value, KT&G Sangsangmadang Chuncheon provides diverse amenities such as a theater, gallery, cafe, art shop, and so on. It has also a charming outdoor space. It has an outdoor stage near Uiamho Lake, and the walking path and the bicycle path are available in front of the stage. In addition, the Forest Experience Center for Children behind the outdoor stage provides diverse interesting attractions.
