Templo Sangwonsa en el Monte Odaesan (상원사(오대산))

El templo Sangwonsa se erige a 8 km al norte del Templo Woljeongsa. Acerca de su origen hay dos versiones. Una, que el templo Sangwonsa fue construido por el monje budista Jajang (590-658) en el año 643, durante el 12o. año de la reina Seondeok del período de Silla; y otra, que lo construyeron Bocheon y Hyomyeong, hijos del Rey Sinmun (reinó entre 681 y 692), en el año 31o. del rey de la dinastía Silla. Sea cual haya sido su origen, el templo fue reconstruido en 705, durante el 4o. año del rey Seongdeok (reinado de 702 a 737), pero un incendio lo consumió en 1946, y fue restaurado otra vez en 1947. Hoy en día, la única parte original que se conserva es el Jonggak (campanario), y el edificio entero fue reconstruido después del Día de la Independencia de Corea.

Las reliquias más antiguas que llegan a nuestros días son la Campana Dongjong (Tesoro Nacional), la Figura del Niño Munsu, y el Jungchang, un documento que promueve la reconstrucción del templo Sangwonsa, escrito por Sejo, el 7o. rey de la dinastía Joseon (reinado de 1455 a 1468). A la entrada, hay un sitio llamado Gwandaegeori, denominado así porque se dice que el Rey Sejo había colgado sus vestimentas reales aquí cuando se tomaba sus baños. También está la Figura del Niño Munsu de donde proviene la leyenda de la relación del Rey Sejo y el monje Munsu. Como Tesoro Nacional, el nombre oficial de esta reliquia es "Escultura de Madera del Niño Munsu Sentado" de Sangwonsa.

Dentro de este templo se preservan otras piezas importantes además de la escultura del Niño Munsu. De entre ellas, merece ser mencionada la Campana Dongjong de Sangwonsa, una campana de 91 cm de diámetro que fue colocada en el año 725 de nuestra era o el 24o. año del rey Seongdeok de la dinastía Silla. Es famosa por su bello y cristalino sonido y el delicado grabado de la figura de Juakbicheon, pero hoy en día se la mantiene en silencio para su buena conservación. El templo Sangwonsa está ubicado sobre la Gran Roca Jungdaeam a medio camino del palacio Jeogmyeolbogung hacia la dirección del pico Birobong del monte Odaesan. A 2 km hacia el sudoeste se halla una ermita donde fluyen las corrientes que dan nacimiento al río Hangang. El palacio Jeogmyeolbogung es un relicario que sirve de mausoleo donde se guardan los antiguos restos del Buda traídos por el monje Jajang desde China.
