El Templo Sangwonsa está ubicado en la falda del pico Namdaebong (1.182 m) en el extremo sur del monte Chiaksan, y está construido sobre una superficie rocosa de unos 330 m2. Entre las rocas frente al templo emana un fresco manantial, al frente hay un acantilado de más de 40 m de altura, y en el extremo del acantilado hay 3 curiosos canelos. La leyenda del faisán que devolvió el favor, originaria del monte Chiaksan, nació de este templo. La fecha de fundación de este templo no se conoce exactamente, pero considerando las reliquias que son sus pagodas, se estima que data de la era de Silla. Las dos pagodas frente al santuario principal agregan majestuosidad a este templo, y han sido designadas Patrimonio Cultural Tangible de Gangwon-do.
