La Fortaleza Chojijin fue construida en 1656 con la intención de defender la nación de los ataques extranjeros. La fortaleza abarca las fortificaciones de Jangjapyeongdon y Seomamdon, que fueron construidas en 1679. Chojijin fue el escenario de duras batallas durante Byeonginyangyo (invasión francesa en 1866), Sinmiyangyo (invasión estadounidense en 1871), y el enfrentamiento con los japoneses en Unyomaru de 1875.
