Located in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, Hongwhikwan offers guests a traditional “hanok” experience filled with the gentle scents of red clay and wood. The hotel is located in front of the UNESCO World Heritage site Gongsanseong Fortress, with Geumgang River flowing behind the complex.
There are six rooms in total, all Korean-style with floor bedding for double, triple, and quadruple occupancy. High ceilings and exposed girders greet visitors upon entering the rooms that are decorated with traditional bedding, Korean paper windows, elegant muslin curtains, and colorful cushions. Each room is equipped with a TV set, a refrigerator, and a bathroom with a hairdryer, making it an ideal place to start and end the day. The spacious courtyard also comes with traditional games like “jegi chagi” and “yutnori.” Coffee and Korean tea are found in the second-floor community room, while the kitchen serves complimentary breakfast every morning with a simple menu of toast, beverages, fruits, and breakfast cereals. Furthermore, the complex is close to major tourist sites, such as the Gongjusanseong Market, Gongju National Museum, the UNESCO World Heritage site Ancient Tombs in Songsan-ri, and Tomb of King Muryeong. Sangsoo Herb Land is an arboretum which houses 1,000 species of herbs throughout its 82,645㎡ (25,000 pyeong) area. The glass greenhouse, spanning over 9,917㎡ (3,000 pyeong), keeps herbs fresh and green, even in the winter season. Herb Land is well-known for their flowers that bloom year-round, as well their diverse events including the Herb Land Festival held in May each year, wedding ceremonies, banquets, hands-on program classes, and more.

Sangsoo Herb Land provides a wide array of programs for visitors. The major event is the Herb Land Festival, aiming to spread knowledge on the use of diverse herbs, including introducing the aromatic value of herb plants in landscaping and as a natural insecticide, as well as the health benefits of herbal foods. Its signature dish is a daegujjim (braised codfish), featuring chewy, high-protein fresh codfish combined with bean sprouts, various vegetables, and seafood, all seasoned with a spicy sauce. The fresh ingredients like bean sprouts and water parsley add a refreshing taste to the daegujjim. The dish can be ordered in various sizes, depending on the number of diners. The restaurant also offers a special delicacy, daegu twigim (deep-fried codfish), which perfectly complements the spicy flavor of the daegujjim.

Using rice from Gongju, the rice is flavorful and nourishing, complemented by fresh vegetables from Jirisan Mountain, making for a healthy meal. Singwangsa Temple is located on Nojeoksan Mountain. It is estimated to have been built 160 years ago, and renovated in 1920 by head monk Lee Gyeong-jik. The temple, originally called Togoljeol or Suryangsa, was renamed Singwangsa by monk Hyewon in 1980. Visitors will discover that this temple is filled with youthful energy.
