Le marché de Jagalchi est situé le long de la rue Haean-ro, reliant les quartiers de Nampo-dong et Chungmu-dong dans le centre-ville de Busan. C’est le plus grand marché de fruits de mer en Corée, où se combinent les fonctions commerciales et touristiques. Ce lieu, symbole de l’identité locale, joue un rôle essentiel dans l’histoire et la culture du quartier de Jung-gu.

Le nom « Jagalchi » viendrait soit du nom de la côte appelée « Jagalchi », soit du mot utilisé dans le milieu de la pêche pour désigner ce lieu réputé pour la vente exclusive de poissons vivants. En bord de mer, on peut observer des scènes uniques où les vendeurs proposent du maquereau, des ascidies et de la viande de baleine.

Le nouveau bâtiment du marché aux poissons, ouvert en 1980, comprend un rez-de-chaussée où l’on peut acheter des produits frais et déguster des sashimis sur place, ainsi que deux étages supérieurs dédiés aux produits séchés et à la restauration, ce qui en fait un point central du marché.

L’histoire du marché remonte à 1889, lorsque des Japonais ont établi une entreprise de pêche pour protéger leurs ressortissants, ce qui a conduit au regroupement de marchands coréens dans la zone. Avec l’essor du commerce maritime, le marché s’est développé rapidement et a fini par devenir le marché aux poissons central de Busan. En 1922, la construction d’un entrepôt moderne et le lancement de ventes en consignation ont renforcé son importance. Aujourd’hui encore, les pêcheurs qui débarquent au port du sud viennent vendre leurs produits à Jagalchi, perpétuant la tradition du plus grand marché de poissons de Corée.
