Pungsuwon fut le premier village catholique dans lequel plus de 40 fidèles de Yongin (Gyeonggi-do), dirigés par Sin Tae-bo (ou Saint-Pierre), se sont installés pour échapper aux persécutions religieuses des catholiques de 1801 (Sinyubakhae). Pendant 80 ans, les colons avaient mené une vie religieuse sans prêtre jusqu'à ce que le père Le Merre (un prêtre français) arrive au village en 1888. Avec l’aide du Père Jeong Gyu-ha (ou Augustino) et d’ingénieurs chinois, la cathédrale Pungsuwon fut construite et achevée en 1907 par les fidèles. Elle est aujourd’hui la 4ème cathédrale construite en Corée et constitue un endroit populaire. On l’a voit souvent apparaître dans les drames et les films coréens. Elle a été désignée comme patrimoine culturel locale no 69 de Gangwon-do en 1982.
