Le Mt. Hallasan est aussi connu sous le nom de Baengnokdam, du fait de la légende qui veut que des immortels soient descendus des cieux sur des cerfs blancs appelés 'baengnok'. Avec une circonférence de 2,000m et une profondeur de 100m, grimper le Mt. Hallasan permet de voir pratiquement toute l'île de Jeju. Avec une profondeur de 1950m, c'est l aplus haute montagne de Corée. Le volcan maintenant éteint est entré en éruption au cours de la 4ème ère Cénozoique. La pente sud est raide comparée aux pentes douces du nord, de l'est et de l'ouest. Un cratère appelé Baengnokdam (3km de circonférence, diamètre de 500m) entouré de 360 cônes parasitaires tels que Heukbulgeunoreum, Saraoreum, Sungneoloreum et Euseungsaengoreum se trouve au sommet.
Le Mt. Hallasan a été désigné monument naturel No. 182.
Le chemin de randonnée Yeongshil est souvent encombré, il est donc recommandé de prendre les chemins Gwaneumsa ou Seongakpan. Comme le Mt. Hallasan devient obscure avant 18h, ceux désirant le grimper doivent commencer avant 9 heures. Les bus prenant l'autoroute 516 partent toutes les 15 (à partie de 6h) du terminal et le bus 1100 part toutes les 80 minutes (à partir de 6h30), il est donc conseillé de prendre les transports en commun.
