Fue el área en donde se refugiaron aproximadamente 40 católicos, encabezados por el mártir Sin Tae-bo (nombre católico: Pedro) en Yongin, de Gyeonggi-do, después de la Persecución Católica de Sinyu en el año 1801. Durante un período de más de 80 años, los creyentes católicos habían mantenido su fe sin la presencia de un sacerdote, hasta que finalmente en el año 1888, el clérigo francés, Le Merre, fue designado obispo encargado de esta área, y así comenzó a difundirse activamente el catolicismo. En el año 1896, el coreano Jeong Gyu-ha (nombre cristiano: Augustino), fue el sucesor de Le Merre, quien junto a un técnico chino construyó la actual iglesia. La construcción fue terminada en el año 1907, y en la obra participaron los mismos creyentes. Aún hoy, luego de que hayan transcurrido más de 100 años, sigue manteniendo su elegancia y su belleza arquitectónica. Es frecuentado como el lugar de rodaje de famosas telenovelas, y también es un destino muy visitado por parejas de enamorados. Es la primera iglesia católica construida por un clérigo coreano, la primera en la provincia de Gangwon-do, y el cuarta en Corea. Fue designada Patrimonio Cultural Regional Nº 69 de Gangwon-do en el año 1982.
