El árbol ginkgo de Bangye-ri, en Wonju, ha estado protegido como Monumento Natural desde su designación el 31 de enero de 1964. Se desconoce la edad exacta del árbol, pero se estima que tiene más de 800 años. El árbol alcanza una altura total de 33, con una copa que se extiende 37,5 m de este a oeste y 31 m de norte a sur. Según la leyenda sobre el origen del árbol, fue plantado por un miembro de la familia Lee de Seongju, quien se detuvo aquí para tomar un trago de agua y dejó su bastón en el suelo cuando se fue. Luego, el bastón creció hasta convertirse en un árbol. Otra leyenda dice que hay una serpiente blanca viviendo en el árbol, razon por la cual este ha crecido tan fuerte y grande. Los agricultores locales creen que tendrán una buena cosecha si todo el arbol se vuelve dorado en otoño.
