Fue inaugurada en abril de 1970, con el nombre “Hyundai Hwarang” en Insa-dong, distrito de Jongno-gu, Seúl. Durante más de 40 años ha presentado exposiciones de los artistas más célebres en la historia de Corea: Park Su-geun, Lee Jung-seob, Kim Hwan-gi, Chang Ucchin, Chun Kyung-ja, Lee Dae-won, Yu Yeong-guk, Lee U-fan, Paik Nam-june, Shim Moon-seup, etc.

Consta de dos edificios, el principal y otro anexo, y también dispone de una sede en Gangnam. La galería de Gangnam abarca una dimensión más amplia de artistas sin restricción de género ni estilo, de tal manera que presenta exposiciones de alta calidad, posibilitando el conocimiento del mercado artístico tanto nacional como extranjero. Esta institución artística también se encarga de presentar y promocionar a artistas jóvenes.

Antes de convertirse en un espacio de arte en 2007, Tongui-dong Boan sirvió como lugar de descanso para los viajeros desde 1942 hasta 2005. El Museo Gahoe fue inaugurado en el año 2002 y expone pinturas populares, amuletos, etc., que muestran la vida y la aspiración que tenían los coreanos en la antigüedad. Se cuentan 250 pinturas populares, 750 talismanes, 150 tomos de libros antiguos, 200 dibujos de dioses, 250 materiales folclóricos, entre otros, que hacen un total de 1.700 piezas en exposición.

En el interior del área dedicada a las casas tradicionales hanok se puede conocer y explorar la vida de las personas en el pasado histórico, pinturas populares, dibujos que reflejan la religión y los mitos tradicionales, tejas con las imágenes de personas o espíritus, etc. Además, en los biombos decorados con talismanes, se puede echar un vistazo al esfuerzo que hacían los antepasados para superar las dificultades.
