Es un templo milenario que se encuentra ubicado al pie del monte Goryeongsan (622 m), y fue construido por orden de la reina Jinseong (894) de la dinastía Silla. En aquel tiempo formaba parte de los 6 templos más importantes del norte del río Hangang. El templo ha atravesado varias etapas de reconstrucción y remodelación a lo largo de la historia.
