Fue el lugar sagrado en donde Dangun (personaje legendario, fundador del Reino Gojoseon), ofrecía sacrificios para el Dios del Cielo. Es un altar de piedra, con la base circular, y la parte superior cuadrada. El altar fue restaurado y reparado a lo largo de varias épocas de la historia, en el 11º año del rey Wonjong de Goryeo (1270), a los 17 años de reinado de Injo de Joseon (1639), y al 26º año del reinado de Sukjong (1700).
En la actualidad, se realiza en este lugar la representación del ritual de Dangun, en el Día de la Fundación Nacional de cada año. Además, la antorcha que se presenta en el campeonato nacional deportivo, es encendida en este altar y trasladada hasta el estadio deportivo. En particular, también la antorcha que iluminó los Juegos Paralímpicos de 1988 comenzó su andadura en este altar.

El templo Yonggungsa está ubicado en la ladera noreste del monte Baekusan, en la misma región que el Aeropuerto Internacional de Incheon. Durante la dinastía Silla (hace unos 1.300 años) el templo era llamado "Baekunsa" por el rey Munmu, en referencia a la montaña donde se ubica. Durante la dinastía Joseon fue la residencia temporal de Heungseon Daewongun (1820-1898, político y padre del rey Gojong), que pasó 10 años en el templo orando por el ascenso al trono de su hijo. Cuando su hijo fue finalmente coronado rey, Heungseon Daewongun reconstruyó el templo cambiando su nombre por el actual de "Yonggungsa".
El templo consiste en varias construcciones como el Gwaneumjeon (reconstruido por Heungseon Daewongun), Yosachae (residencia de los monjes), Chilseonggak, y Yonghwanggak. En Yosachae, los escritos de Heuseon Daewongun cuelgan aún de la pared, y recientemente fue añadida una estatua Maitreya de 11 metros de altura. Enfrente del templo hay dos zelkovas de 1.300 años.
