Jukdo Market (죽도시장)

Explanation

Pohang Jukdo Market formed nearly 50 years ago, when market stalls began to form around the swampy area near the reed beds in the inner port of Pohang. In October 1969, the Jukdo Market Association was officially formed, becoming one of the largest traditional markets on Gyeongsangbuk-do’s east coast, home to nearly 1,500 shops. The market’s existence was threatened by the influx of large discount stores, but the merchants have banded together to overcome this challenge by creating Cyber Jukdo Market. About 500 meters from the center of Pohang at Ogeor is Jukdo Fish Market, the largest permanent market on the eastern coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Nearly 200 restaurants specializing in hoe (sliced raw fish) can be found on top of the market, serving fresh sliced raw fish at affordable prices throughout the season. Visitors can take their purchase to nearby restaurants to be prepared on the spot after paying a table setting fee. Famous dishes include the Pohang-style cold raw fish soup, made with fresh seasonal seafood, and abalone rice porridge, full of plump abalone. In winter, visitors can sample Pohang’s famous half-dried saury.
