Located near the Daereungwon Ancient Tombs in Gyeongju, Sugyeong Sikdang is housed in a renovated old building, featuring ochre-colored exterior walls and a thatched roof that create a folksy ambiance. Its signature dish is chalboribap jeongsik (steamed barley rice set menu), accompanied by doenjang jjigae (soybean paste jjigae). Patrons have the option to customize their bibimbap by adding gangdoenjang (seasoned soybean paste) and gochujang (red chili paste) to their taste. Additionally, the restaurant offers pajeon (green onion pancake) and deodeok muchim (deodeok salad), each prepared using their own secret recipes.

Gyeongju Gyerim Forest (경주 계림)

Gyerim Forest is located between the Cheomseongdae Observatory and Wolseong Fortress. The forest is thickly populated by ancient zelkova and willow trees rooted on gently sloping hills and along the small stream in the northwest part of the woods. According to legend, the forest is closely associated with myths surrounding the birth of Alji, the founder of the Gyeongju Kim clan. As such, it is designated national Historic Site No. 19.
Legend has it that King Talhae heard a rooster crying from deep inside the Sirim Woods. Chancellor Hogong was sent to investigate. Upon arriving, he found a rooster crying underneath a tree on which hung a golden box. Hogong immediately reported his find to the king, who instructed him to bring the golden box into the palace. The king opened the box and found a small child inside, Kim Alji. The forest, which had previously been called ‘Sirim’ or ‘Gurim’, became known as ‘Gyerim’, ('gye’ meaning rooster). The name Gyerim was also used to refer to the Silla kingdom.
Alji was adopted as the king’s son, but because the crown was passed on to King Pasa of the Park family, he never ascended the throne. The Kim clan later became the royal bloodline with the coronation of King Naemul some years later.
The memorial stone recording the birth of Kim Alji was erected in the third year of King Sunjo's rule in the Joseon dynasty. Located close to the royal fortress of Silla, the forest is still deeply revered as the mystical birthplace of the first ancestor of the royal Kim clan of Silla. Yellow canola blossoms along the path connecting Daereungwon with Gyerim and Banwolseong only add to the magical ambiance of the forest.

Hwangnam Bread (황남빵)

When Hwangnam Bread was created in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju, in 1939, people began to refer to it as “the bread from Hwangnam.” Over time, the name stuck. The late Choi Yeong-hwa, the founder of Hwangnam Bread, was a scion of the Gyeongju Choi family who came up with this masterpiece when he was 21 years old after much trial and error. Mr. Choi’s creation is based on the tradition of rice cakes and bread made with sweet red beans, passed down throughout the generations in his family. Even today, 80 years after the creation of the bread, it is only flavored with red beans. Another defining feature of Hwangnam Bread is the delicate comb pattern inspired by the aesthetics of the Silla period.

Cheomseongdae Observatory (경주 첨성대)

Cheomseongdae Observatory, constructed during the reign of Queen Seondeok (r. 632-647), is one of the landmark of Gyeongju. The observatory was built in a cylinder shape at approximately 9 meters in x_height. The observatory consists of 365 stones, symbolizing the number of days in a year. The rocks are piled in 27 layers symbolizing the 27th ruler, Queen Seondeok, and the days in a lunar month by adding the of two rock layers on top.

This hanok (traditional Korean house) is located very near to Cheomseongdae Observatory. Its location in front of the Gyeongju Historic Areas allows guests to reach major sights in Gyeongju like Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, and Hwangnidan-gil Street by foot. This hanok symbolizes the historicity of the city of Gyeongju in that during its construction a female skeleton and accessories made out of precious metals were excavated from the site. The accommodation’s name comes from the idiom “Muwijayeon (leaving nature as it is),” combining bamboo and pine trees with green grass, show its dedication to ideals of rest and philosophy.
There are five rooms in total, all ondol (under-the-floor heating system) rooms for two. Korean paper lining the walls and old-fashioned furniture speak to the ideal beauty of hanok. The raised floor space, which is attached to the “Munmu” room, is a great place to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. All rooms have modern bathrooms with shower facilities, and a complimentary breakfast is served in the cafe on site from 8:00 to 9:00 in the morning. The complex has abundant parking spaces for the guests.

Nadeul Hanok was opened in 2018 with brand-new facilities, in a location just a minute’s walk from Cheomseongdae Observatory in Gyeongju. You can feel a sense of healing in nature in the traditional style house, built in environment-friendly construction method with wood and earth. The ‘ㄷ’-shaped building creates a snug atmosphere and the hipped-and-gable roof and the curves of the roof tile show the traditional quiet and still flavor of a traditional Korean house. There are 7 rooms in Nadeul Hanok. Among them, the Garam, Gayeon, and Nuri Rooms are offered at 50,000 won for 2 persons during off-season so that visitors can enjoy staying in a traditional Korean house at more affordable prices. All rooms are equipped with a bathroom for better convenience and there is an individual thermostat all year round. Complimentary breakfast made of healthy convenience food is offered to all guests. The menu is composed of barley bread, fruit, coffee, juice, boiled egg, and biscuit, and is subject to change according to situation. What is good is that the breakfast can be delivered to the room if the delivery time is requested during breakfast time, which is from 8 to 9 AM. It is possible to look around the tourist attractions near Nadeul Hanok on foot. In addition, there are CVs, fast food shops, bike rental shops, and hanbok rental shops adjacent to Nadeul Hanok, enabling a more convenient and joyful tour.

Gyeongju Poseokjeong Pavilion Site (경주 포석정지)

Poseokjeong Pavilion served as a separate palace where kings enjoyed banquets with nobles. The building no longer exists, but the abalone-shaped stone water canal still remains, speculated to have been built during the Unified Silla period although the exact year is unknown. The water canal has an estimated length of 10 meters, with a x_width of approximately 35 centimeters and an average depth of 26 centimeters. Based on Chinese writings from 353, it is said that drinking glasses were floated on the canal. One popular party game had guests creating poems before the glass had passed nine sections of the canel. Guests who could not do this had to drink three glasses. Modern research has shown that the site was not merely a place for fun, but also served as a meeting venue for the royal family, as well as for holding memorial services.
