Hongseong is the hometown of many historical figures including General Choi Yeong, a great commander during the late Goryeo dynasty; Seong Sam-mun, a scholar-official fighting against injustice; Han Yong-un who was a resistance fighter against Japanese influence with his fidelity and integrity; Kim Jwa-jin who won the Battle of Cheongsanni against Japan; Han Seong-jun who was a Korean folk dancer and a master dancer of Joseon; and Lee Eung-no who is famous overseas as a modern artist. Hongseon Hero Festival invites visitors to learn more about these historical heros through various programs.

The Hongju Millennium Monument was created in 2018 to commemorate the past one thousand years of history in Hongseong (previously called Hongju), while also looking to the future and the next one thousand years. The entire monument is shaped like an hourglass, with historical figures, cultural assets and specialty products of the area at the top, and a time capsule embedded at the bottom of the monument, set to be opened in 2118.

Situated at the foot of Taehwasan Mountain in Gongju, Magoksa Temple was established in 640. It is reputed to protect its occupants from war, and indeed, the temple survived the Japanese invasion of Korea (also known as the Imjin War; 1592-1598) and the Korean War (1950-1953). It houses numerous cultural heritage items, and visitors can participate in the Templestay program to experience life in a Korean Buddhist temple.
