Les divers événements du festival s'étalent sur une période d'un mois dans la ville de Gangneung et au sommet de Daegwallyeong, cependant la fête principale se déroule sur une période d'une semaine dans le centre de Gangneung et à proximité de la rièvre Namdaecheon.

Le principal attrait du festivall rèside dans les rituels chamanistes. La première journée est marquée par un défilé commémoratif spectaculaire faisant participer plus de 5 000 personnes dans le centre-ville de Gangneung. Pendant le festival, les visiteurs peuvent également apprécier le théâtre masqué Gwanno ainsi que divers chants et danses chamaniques.

Le festival a été classé au patrimoine immatériel de l'Unesco en 2005 et patromoine culturel majeur num. 13 en Corée en1967. Il est en effet reconnu comme l'un des festivals servant à la transmission de la culture folklorique de la dynastie Joseon.
