El Festival Internacional de Cortos de Busan empezó en 1980 como el 'Festival de Cortometraje de Corea', introduciendo una variedad de cortometrajes domésticos incluidos películas 8 mm y películas independientes producidas por estudiantes universitarios y ciudadanos. En 2000, el festival cambió su nombre por Festival de Cortometrajes Asiáticos de Busan y se expandió para incluir cortometrajes de toda Asia, muchos de los cuales incluían las películas asiáticas populares del año.
