Garam Choyeonjae stands within Hahoe Traditional Village in a loop of the beautiful Nakdonggang River in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Among Hahoe’s tile-roofed old houses, this one’s thatched roof stands out. ‘Garam’ was the pen name of the owner’s grandfather - a descendant of the Joseon scholar Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong - while ‘Choyeonjae’ means a thatched house where swallows live. The swallows’ nest is still there under the eaves, and sunset views from the wooden terrace of the sarangchae (men’s house) are a dreamy experience. Visitors can also learn about traditional technologies such as treadmills and millstones.

The rooms are simple and elegant, with antique mother-of-pearl cupboards, tableware cabinets, and ceramics placed here and there add to the old-time charm. Guests can enjoy traditional folk games, or have a go at home-brewing or making rice cakes and sweets.

Damyeonjae is a hanok accommodation located in Hahoe Village, Andong. It was built in the 1980s but faithfully implemented the appearance of a traditional hanok. The chimney rising behind the yard and the tiles which line the roof are excellent enough to be considered a cultural asset, and the wood used for the beams and the cheongmaru is also very luxurious. Uniquely, it was built in a 'c' shape with the gate and haengnangchae moved to the edge of the yard, rather than a square shape like the traditional hanok in the Gyeongsang region. Thanks to the open view to the south, the entire Andong Hahoe Village and Hwasan Mountain can be viewed from the yard. Damyeonjae is the home of Korean actor Ryu Si-won, and his is known to have spent his childhood here. In 1999, Queen Elizabeth II of England experienced Korean culture and received a 73rd birthday award here, making it even more famous. Damyeonjae is currently operated as a hanok stay where only one group can stay each day. The kitchen and bathroom are modernly decorated to add convenience.

This hanok (traditional Korean House) lies only 500 m away from Andong’s Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy. Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy is one of the Confucian academies (Joseon-era places of learning and veneration of Confucian scholars) registered as a UNESCO World Heritage, and is particularly known for its beautiful harmony with the surrounding nature. Songgyehyeon likewise faces the Nakdonggang River to the front, and a 330 m-high mountain to the back, displaying the characteristic harmony of hanok with nature.
The house was named Songgyehyeon by the owner, who wanted to build a house made out of pine trees (“song”). The entire house is offered for rent, which makes it ideal for families and groups. Songgyeheon follows a strictly traditional structure of hanok, as evident in its hipped-and-gable roof, but its interior is equipped with comfortable modern facilities. The house includes both bedrooms and Korean-style ondol (under-the-heating system) rooms. One of the three bedrooms available has a queen-sized bed, while the remaining two are equipped with comfortable mats. The common space, spacious enough to host a group, has a high ceiling dominated by exposed beams. The kitchen is equipped with cooking equipment like refrigerator, gas stove, microwave oven, and utensils for guests to cook their own food. The owner of the house also enthusiastically provides detailed information on Andong’s many tourist sites.

Before it became a Confucian academy, Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy was originally located in Pungsang-hyeon under the name Pungakseodang School, which was used as a educational institution since the Goryeo dynasty by a political party known as the Sarim Party. It was moved to its current location in Byeongsan by a well-respected Confucian scholar named Yu Seong-nyong, penname Seoae, in 1572.

When Yu Seong-nyong passed away in 1607, many of his followers and other renowned scholars commemorated the late Confucian scholar by building Jondeoksa Shrine to enshrine his ancestral tablet in 1613, followed by renaming of the institution to Byeongsanseowon in 1614. Yu Seong-nyong's ancestral tablet was later moved to Yeogangseowon to be placed together with the ancestral tablet of Toegye Yi Hwang. In 1629, another ancestral tablet of the late scholar was made and housed in Jondeoksa Shrine.

In 1863, Byeongsanseowon was recognized by the king to receive support as a private Confucian academy. The lecture hall and shrine were reconstructed in 1921 and 1937 respectively as part of preservation efforts made during the Japanese occupation. This academy is designated as Historic Site No. 260, housing a collection of 1,000 documents and 3,000 books, including works by Yu Seong-nyong.
