Imsil, which has a well-developed dairy industry, is commonly regarded as the home of cheese. However, it is also renowned among those with an affinity for traditional Korean music as the home of Pilbong Nongak. Nongak is a genre of music that serves to foster communal harmony and the peace of the village. It is a comprehensive art form that incorporates a variety of elements, including instrumental performances, marching, dancing, and singing. In 2014, it was designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in recognition of its cultural significance. Nongak is transmitted in diverse forms throughout Korea. Pilbong Nongak from Imsil is regarded as one of the five principal nongaks of Korea, alongside Jinju Samcheonpo Nongak, Pyeongtaek Nongak, Iri Nongak, and Gangneung Nongak. In particular, the music is distinguished by its robust rhythmic foundation, exemplified by the kkwaenggwari (a small handheld gong).
Dance by Leading Gong-Player is a traditional play based on Pilbong Nongak. Set in the 1970s, the play narrates the tales of a kkwaenggwari player named Yang, a resident of Pilbong Village, who safeguards the maeulgut, a shamanistic ritual, and his son, Bong-pil, who desires to leave the village in pursuit of success, and the other inhabitants who collectively uphold the traditions of nongak. Furthermore, scenes that provide insight into traditional Korean culture, such as a traditional wedding, a flower-covered coffin, and herding cattle, serve to enhance the overall enjoyment of the performance.
The concert hall is situated in Pilbong Cultural Village, which is located at the base of Pilbongsan Mountain. Pilbong Cultural Village offers a variety of amenities, including traditional Korean hanok accommodation, a modest library, a café, and a hiking trail, providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy both cultural performances and relaxation in nature.
