The Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) was established on September 7, 1988 as a large-scale business town for domestic and overseas businessmen. A 57-story building contains 20 trade organizations including the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), as well as 250 companies and financial institutions. Hwagyesa Temple was built in 1522 (the seventeenth year of the reign of King Jungjong of the Joseon dynasty) by monk Shinwol, but was destroyed in a fire in 1618. It was rebuilt the following year, and expanded In 1866 through the efforts of Monks Yongseon and Beomun.
