Changuimun a souvent été appelé Jahamun. C’était l’un des quatre petits portails du Nord entourant la ville fortifiée de Séoul au temps de la dynastie Joseon. A cause de la fermeture de Sukjeongmun, l’une de ces quatre portes, Changuimun au Nord est devenue très populaire, tant et si bien que les gens l’appelaient « la Porte du Nord ». C’est également la seule porte parmi les quatre à avoir conservé son état d’origine. Malgré ses petites dimensions (moins de 50 m²), son aspect est solide et robuste. Alors que Dongsomun, une autre des quatre portes, est décorée de phénix, Changuimun est ornée d’un poulet de bois entre ses chevrons. Comme le poulet était supposé être le pire ennemi du mille-pattes, le gens croyaient qu’un poulet de bois permettraient de surmonter l’influence néfaste du mille-pattes.

Mt. Bugaksan (북악산)

Séoul est entourée de montagnes, dont les principales sont Bugaksan, Namsan, Naksan et Inwangsan. Bugaksan, située au Nord de Séoul, est la plus haute d’entre elles, et c’est la partie Sud des monts Bukhansan. Elle est également appelé Baekaksan.

Les remparts de Séoul longent la crête de la montagne et Changuimun (également appelée Jahamun), l’un des quatre petits portails entourant la ville fortifiée au temps de la dynastie Joseon, est situé du côté Ouest de la montagne, à côté de Inwangsan. Passant entre Changuimun et la colline Arirang Jeongreung, la route Bugak Skyway offre une vue panoramique du centre-ville de Séoul. Elle passe aussi par diverses monuments tels que Changuimun et le pavillon Bukak. Au Sud, au pied de la montagne Bukak se trouve également le parc Samcheong.

Les montagnes Inwang (à l’Ouest de Bugaksan) et Naksan (à l’Est) étaient considérées comme des emplacements idéaux selon les préceptes du Feng Shui. Réputée pour son robuste granit, la montagne Inwang a été le théâtre de nombreuses attaques de tigres durant la fondation de la dynastie Joseon. D’après la légende, le roi a supplié la divinité de la montagne d’envoyer les tigres au-delà de la rivière Yalu. Mais si les tigres ont été bannis de Inwangsan, une tigresse enceinte a été autorisée à rester dans la montagne. Ses bébés se sont multipliés et ont fait de Inwangsan un endroit terrifiant, infesté de tigres.

La route Inwang Skyway relie l’Est de Insangwan à Bugaksan. La face Est de Inwangsan a été transformée en zone résidentielle de luxe alors que Guksadang (littéralement « Le Sanctuaire National ») a été déplacé de Namsan à l’Ouest de la montagne dans les années 1920. Encore aujourd’hui, les chamans exécutent des exorcismes et des rituels pour honorer les divinités de la montagne dans ce sanctuaire.

Bukchonmaru Hanok Guesthouse is located between “Bukchon Views 2 and 3” on a hill in Bukchon Village in Seoul. This two-storied hanbok building with a terrace, which is rarely found among other hanok structures in the area, offers a splendid view of Seoul. In particular, the summit of a hill next to the main gate of Choong Ang High School where the guesthouse is situated is known as the filming location for the famous Korean TV series Winter Sonata (2002). When you open the main gate and go up to the first floor, a small yard is seen with a group of jars on one side. After entering the sliding door through the yard, there is daecheong maru (main floored room) that features the doors opening in all directions and a high ceiling with rafters, making the space open and cozy. The hanok building consists of two floors – the ground floor is equipped with special furniture, a jar table and a log chair made by the owner, and on the first floor are guestrooms comprised of one large room and two small rooms. The neat and clean rooms are designed in a simple way and have lovely bedding with the pattern of five cardinal colors. Its staff members can speak English and Chinese to communicate with guests from other countries. Every morning, guests engage in animated conversation while enjoying a Korean home-style breakfast prepared by the owner in a friendly atmosphere. After having breakfast, if guests want, they can try on traditional Korean clothes (hanbok) and take photographs inside and around the guesthouse to create interesting memories. The guesthouse also provides a hanbok rental service (KRW 30,000 for a day) and tourists wearing traditional Korean clothes can enter both Changdeokgung Palace and Gyeongbokgung Palace, which can be reached on foot within 10 to 15 minutes, free of charge. Moreover, guests can enjoy an open view of the area including Gahoe-dong, Gye-dong and even the lights of the Namsan Seoul Tower at night from the roof top.
