Beopgwangsa Temple is located at the foot of Bihaksan Mountain in the city of Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. It was originally built during the reign of King Jinpyeong (579-631) of the Silla Kingdom by Great Monk Wonhyo upon the order of the king.

The temple used to be large measuring 525 kan (kan is a traditional measurement of distance between two columns, about 1.8 meters), but most of its buildings burned down in a fire in 1863. The current buildings were rebuilt in 1952. The site of the old temple is designated as Historical Site no. 493. Some of the remaining relics are a three-story pagoda, Bulsangyeonhwadaejwa (Buddha on a lotus stand), and a twin Ssanggwibu (turtle-shaped stone base of a monument).

The Pohang International Fire & Light Festival is an internationally renowned event themed around the images of “light,” symbolizing the global steel city of Pohang, and “fire,” representing the hot blast furnaces. Performers and local citizens dress up in all sorts of costumes and masks to join in the Fire & Light Parade, which marks the colorful beginning of the festival. The festival culminates in the International Fireworks Show, the highlight of the evening. The world’s best teams participate in the festival every year to give a spectacular show of fireworks against the backdrop of Yeongilman Bay. The festival began in 2004 to commemorate Pohang Citizens Day with a fireworks show and has since become a beloved celebrated annual festival, showcasing the pride of Pohang to its citizens.

You can see the fireworks from Yeongildae Beach and Songdo Beach. Although you can’t hear the music from the show, you can watch the fireworks show peacefully at a less crowded seashore. After the show, you can move to Hyeongsangang Sports Park, the festival venue, to enjoy the rest of the festival’s programs.

Pogaljib is a restaurant known for grilled beef galbi in Duho-dong, Buk-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Its signature dish is Pogalsal (Pohang galbi), and other dishes include the grilled beef tail, grilled boneless short ribs, and Pohang galbi ramyeon. An order of more than four servings per table comes with a Pogal Offal Soup or Pogal Galbi Soup free of charge.
