Historic Site of General Gyebaek (계백장군 유적지)

Gyebaek (? - 660) was a general in the ancient Korean kingdom of Baekje. This historic site is not far from Hwangsanbeol, the last battlefield of General Gyebaek who fell defending Baekje at the end of its days. Allied troops from Silla and Tang attacked Tanhyeon and Baekgang, strategic sites held by Baekje, in 660 (the 20th year of King Uija’s reign).

General Gyebaek and his 5,000 soldiers fought against General Kim Yu-sin and his 50,000 soldiers. General Gyebaek successfully defeated the allied troops four times, but was ultimately unable to overcome the insurmountable numbers brought to bear by his foe. The Baekje army was finally defeated, and the last general of Baekje, Gyebaek, died in the battle.

Dongsang Unjangsangyegok Valley (동상운장산계곡)

Dongsang Unjangsangyegok Valley is a valley located at the easternmost part of Wanju. Spanning approximately 9 kilometers, it combines Dongsanggyegok Valley and Unjangsangyegok Valley. In autumn, the colorful foliage further enhances the joy of hiking.

Daea Arboretum is located in Sancheon-ri, Wanju. Daea Arboretum has an extensive forest of 300,000 ornamental trees. The forest is equipped with spring water, an observatory, forest museum, and a forest classroom. The arboretum focuses on preserving the forest ecosystem, research and utilize domestic plants, and promote forest education to the public. Daea Arboretum has a total of 2,683 species of diverse plants.

Uniram Baniramgyegok Valley (5 km long) falls between Myeongdeokbong Peak and Myeongdobong Peak in the northeastern region of Mount Unjangsan. The name Uniram refers to the steep walls of the valley where nothing but the sky, rocks, thick forests, and clouds can be seen. The valley is also befittingly named Baniram since it is so deep that it only receives direct sunlight for half the day. There are many strangely-shaped rocks like Jjokduri Rock, Cheollyeop Rock, and Daebul Rock scattered throughout the lush valley. At the peak of summer, the area is crowded with vacationers and is also popular for its autumn leaves.

Donamseowon Confucian Academy [UNESCO World Heritage] (돈암서원 [유네스코 세계문화유산])

Donamseowon Confucian Academy was built in 1634, originally 1.5 kilometers away from its current location. It received a royal charter in 1660 and relocated to its current location in 1880 due to flooding problems. The academy's main gate, Ipdeokmun Gate, is made up of three entrance doors. Once inside, Yangseongdang Hall can be seen facing the main gate, with Eungdodang Hall to the left. Ancestral rites take place every February and August at Jungjeong Hall. Inside the academy is a shrine that houses the ancestral tablets of four prominent scholars who taught at this institution - Kim Jang-saeng, Kim jip, Song Jun-gil, and Song Si-yeol. Among the academies that served Kim Jang-saeng and his teachings, Donamseowon is considered the most important and influencial.

Sibipokpo Falls (이폭포(12폭포))

Sibipokpo Falls is a series of 12 ("sibi" in Korean) waterfalls in a valley of Seongchisan Mountain in Geumsan. Visitors can see the falls of various sizes by walking on the hiking trail as it winds its way through the forest along the stream. The path is accessible from the parking lot by Seongchisan Rest Area. Nearby attractions include Simcheon Wellbeing Recreational Forest and Yongdamho Lake.

Sangso-dong Forest Park is located at the point where the foothills of Maninsan Mountain and Sikjangsan Mountain meet. The road to the park is beautifully lined with sycamore trees. Visitors can stack their own rocks and make wishes relating to family, health, relationships, and more. The park is great for walks, hikes, or even just to relax as wild flowers bloom all throughout spring to fall.
