Le parc historique et culturel de Dongdaemun allie les vestiges et l’architecture traditionnelle d’autrefois avec un espace culturel à la pointe du modernisme. Il inclut la citadelle de Séoul, la porte des écluses Igansumun (265 m, 8 030 m²), le hall historique de Dongdaemun (1 313 m²), le hall d’exposition permanent de Dongdaemun (4 460 m²), le hall commémoratif du stade de Dongdaemun (339 m²), le hall des manifestation (2 058 m²) et la galerie du design (400 m²). Deux spots d’éclairage pour les matches nocturnes et la vasque de la flamme olympique sont les témoins de l’ancien stade sportif de Dongdaemun. Des fouilles archéologiques de la citadelle et des sites des anciens stades de base-ball et de football ont permi d’exhumer 44 bâtiments datant de l’époque Joseon (1392 – 1910), dont le terrain d’entraînement Hadogam, ainsi qu’un millier d’objets, parmi lesquels des porcelaines et des céladons de Joseon.

Wan Chai is a Chinese restaurant with a name meaning "spicy," and is a must-visit for those who love spicy food. Rather than the original spicy Chinese Sichuan cuisine, a small amount of Korean spices have been added to create even better tasting dishes.

The most popular item on the menu is a large plate of reddened mussels known as the Extra Spicy Stir-fried Mussels. The dish is a mixture of spicy red peppers, garlic, and spicy sauce, stir-fried to perfection. Many customers also come in for the gul jjamppong (spicy noodle soup with oysters). Even the jajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) tastes great here, with clean-tasting black soy bean sauce. Finally, for dessert, lychee is served, a unique treat to finish off a meal at Wan Chai.

Tombeau royal Jeongneung [Patrimoine Mondial de l'UNESCO] (서울 정릉)

Le tombeau royal Jeongneung est la dernière demeure de la Reine consort Sindeok, la seconde épouse du Roi Taejo (1392-1398), fondateur de la Dynastie Joseon (1392-1910). Cependant, ce tombeau ne fut pas entretenu en comparaison avec les autres tombeaux royaux en raison d’une lutte de pouvoir. La Reine consort eut beaucoup d’enfants qui se sont naturellement affrontés pour le trône. La coutume veut que le premier fils de la première épouse soit l’héritier au trône mais elle fut déterminée à voir l’un de ses fils à y accéder. Cependant, le Roi successeur Taejong tua tous ses fils et developpa une haine extrème envers elle. Quand elle mourut, il ordonna de ne pas entretenir et de ne pas préserver sa tombe. Par conséquent, cette dernière est plutôt négligée et sa disposition ainsi que sa composition sont différentes des autres tombeaux royaux.
Une fois entré par la porte rouge, le bâtiment sacrificiel peut être aperçu devant la tombe le long du pavillion et de la pierre tombale. Des sculptures de pierres représentants des moutons et des tigres veillent sur le tombeau. La différence majeure entre ce dernier et les autres tombeaux royaux est exposée sur le chemin allant de la porte rouge au bâtiment sacrificiel. Généralement, le chemin est une ligne droite, mais à Jeongneung, celui-ci est de travers et courbé. En outre, la couleur du bâtiment sacrificiel est terne et jaunie.
Bien que le tombeau symbolise le désarroi et la fureur des luttes politiques, beaucoup de couples et de familles viennent à Jongneung le temps d’une promenade pour sa tranquillité et ses environs naturels.

Aujourd’hui les restaurants de jokbal continuent de servir un des délices coréens les plus appréciés sur la route principale et les allées des environs de la rue Jangchungdong 1(il)-ga.

An elderly lady with fine wrinkles is still in charge of creating the captivating taste of jokbal (steamed pork hock). Originally, the restaurant did not have a name, but customers referred to it as the “Fat Grandma’s Place.” Sure enough, as you enter the restaurant, you will notice a plump, elderly lady with silver hair sitting at the counter. The place is well known for jokbal with an exquisite combination of rich meat and soft fat. Three or four ingredients, including ginger, are added to the simmering broth to eliminate the strong meat smell. When you order a small serving, you are served radish “water” kimchi as well as two small bindaetteok free. You can order additional bindaetteok too, three for 5,000 won. When you order a large serving, you are served four free bindaetteok. Many customers order jaengbanguksu (spicy buckwheat noodles), which goes perfectly with jokbal.

Following his mother’s footsteps, the son of the previous owner is now managing the family business. Opened during the early years of Jokbal Street, the delicious meat at this restaurant is fondly remembered by customers. While the meat itself has almost no fat, the fat portion is extremely soft and savory. This restaurant is also different from the others in that it provides kongnamul-guk (bean sprout soup) with the jokbal (steamed pork hock). Pyeongyang-style naengmyeon (cold noodles) and tteok-mandu-guk (rice cake-dumpling soup) are also delicious. Pyeongyang naengmyeon is cooked to suit South Korean tastebuds. Besides, the noodles and dumplings are hand-made. Despite the restaurants long history, the building of the restaurant is clean and well-maintained as it was being rebuilt after a fire in the 1980s. There are plenty of tables on the first and second floors to accommodate customers, and the third floor is reserved for large groups.
