The main building in Seoul is a traditional Korean cultural space renovated by Jeong Yeong-jin, a human cultural asset, from a hanok with a history of 130 years. “The Place Seoul” is located in a small alley in Gyedong-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul. It is a guesthouse made by remodeling an 80-year-old traditional Korean house. The ondol room furnished with traditional beddings is popular not only among foreigners but also among Koreans due to its special ambience. The ceiling of the room dates back to 80 years ago. The rafter put on the roof at the time of construction of the house shows the antiqueness of the house. The toenmaru (a narrow wooden porch running along the outside of a room) that comes alive with the frequent coming and going of people adds to the ambience of the traditional Korean house, with the Sansuyu (corni) tree and vegetable garden beside the Korean-style house creating a leisurely atmosphere. Beyond being a mere place to sleep in, “The Place Seoul” aims to be a composite cultural space whose motto is “the place to fill.” A simple wedding or a small-scale performance is held in the garden during the day. The rooms can be rented for small meetings. “The Place Seoul” sponsors “WWOOF KOREA,” an NGO promoting environment-friendly agriculture as well as the right dietary life, “Slow Food Korea,” and “Slow Box.” As such, the place serves a special healthy breakfast consisting of homemade bread, handmade yogurt, and organic fruits and vegetables. In addition, the toilet paper, detergent, shampoo, etc. provided are all environment-friendly products. “The Place Seoul” is located on Gyedong-gil Road, a famous tourist attraction in Seoul. Itaewon est une destination populaire et très touristique pour les étrangers qui vivent en Corée ou qui viennent juste pour visiter. Les nombreuses enseignes en anglais ainsi que la population d'Itaewon en font un quartier original où l'on se sent à l’aise. Des petits magasins de souvenirs vendus aux soldats américains se sont ouverts dès la fin de la guerre de Corée. Et depuis ce temps, les commerces et shopping centers se sont développés pour les résidents étrangers et les touristes. Grâce aux Jeux Olympiques de Séoul en 1988, Itaewon s’est aussi rapidement développé comme un quartier de shopping en Corée du Sud.

A partir du milieu des années 1990, les rues jusque-là surtout fréquentées par des soldats de l’armée américaine ont vu affluer de nombreux touristes venus du monde entier, du Japon, de Hong Kong, de Chine, de l’Asie du Sud-est, d’Afrique et du Moyen-orient.

En 1997, Itaewon a été désigné comme zone spéciale touristique. Les langues comme le japonais et le chinois, tout aussi bien que l’anglais sont parlées dans la plupart des magasins.

On peut également trouver des restaurants spéciaux qui conviennent à tous les goûts. Il y a aussi bien de la nourriture turque, indienne, pakistanaise, suisse et thaïlandaise, et bien sûr, de la nourriture authentiquement américaine.

Considéré comme un endroit touristique réputé dans le monde, Itaewon permet non seulement de faire du shopping mais aussi de voir la culture traditionnelle de la Corée.

Beaucoup de festivals sont tenus à Itaewon tel que “Le Festival mondial” dans lequel on y présente tout aussi bien la culture coréenne que d’autres cultures traditionnelles venant des quatre coins du monde.

La grande rue de 1,4 km qui s’étend depuis Itaewon 1-dong jusqu’à Hannam 2-dong a été designée « Rue d’Itaewon ». On y trouve un vaste choix de boutiques, de lieux de loisirs et de restaurants. Itaewon propose le meilleur de la mode exotique, de bars et des clubs en Corée.
