El Parque Nacional del Monte Deogyusan abarca los distritos Geochang-gun de Gyeongsangnam-do y Muju-gun de Jeollabuk-do. Comenzado en el pico principal del monte Deogyusan, Hyangjeokbong, las crestas se hallan a unos 1.300 m sobre el nivel del mar, y se extienden hacia el sudoeste por unos 18 km, sus cadenas ramales se dividen en muchas direcciones para crear una enorme cadena montañosa.

En la montaña, para cada una de las líneas de crestas de cadenas ramales, hay valles que les corresponden. Entre estos valles, el Valle Gucheondong, que se despliega por unos 25 km desde el pico Deogyubong hasta el río Seolcheon al norte, es el más famoso. En el valle hay 33 paisajes bien conocidos por su belleza, denominados Gucheondong 33 Gyeong y de entre ellos, el número 12, conocido con el nombre de Susimdae, es el más hermoso. Susimdae es una hondonada de 400 m de profundidad. Por el agua clara como el jade que fluye a través de ella, suele ser llamada Suhwa.

El monte Deogyusan tiene también tres valles que se hallan agrupados juntos, los valles Chiryeon, Jeoksang y Munan, y de estos, Chiryeon es el más hermoso. Es famoso por las cascadas Chiryeon, donde las claras aguas pasan entre un espeso bosque de pinos y avanzan entre diversas formas de rocas. Este flujo de agua ha creado los siete estanques, y la forma en la que todos se hallan alineados los convierten en una vista sumamente interesante. El agua cristalina llega a cada estanque, dibuja círculos por un rato y luego cae en el siguiente creando siete segmentos de caídas de agua. Las cascadas Chiryeon se funden a la perfección con su entorno de viejos pinos y arces. En el verano, visitan el área numerosos veraneantes; y en el otoño, la gente que viaja en busca de las hojas otoñales. El monte Deogyusan tiene muchos puntos panorámicos de gran belleza, tales como valles, cascadas, bosques de pinos y rocas de formas fantásticas, entre otros. Además de todo esto, con el valle Gucheondong como atracción principal, junto con la Oficina de Administración del Parque Nacional, proveen a los visitantes con muchas instalaciones de comodidad con el fin de hacer que su estancia aquí sea más que placentera.

Valle Gucheondong (구천동계곡)

El valle Gucheondong se encuentra dentro del monte Deogyusan, en Jeollabuk-do. A menudo se lo llama Muju Gucheondong, que se refiere a un sendero y corriente de agua de una longitud de 25 km, que une Rajetongmun con el templo Baengnyeonsa del monte Deogyusan.

El valle Gucheondong no es una hondonada profunda, pero corre a través de un fresco bosque que es muy pintoresco. La calma y los suaves sonidos provenientes del río son muy refrescantes. Los 33 puntos panorámicos de Gucheondong son los que le han dotado de gran fama.

Los dos panoramas más conocidos son Rajetongmun y Susimdae. Rajetongmun, a primera vista es una inmensa roca con un hoyo atravesado en forma de túnel. Durante la era de los Tres Reinos, este punto solía ser la frontera entre Silla y Baekje. Como era la línea divisoria de dos Estados, aún hoy en día, las costumbres y la forma de hablar difieren entre los habitantes de cada región. Nadie sabe cómo se hizo el hoyo en la roca, pero la experiencia de atravesarlo produce una sensación curiosa. Susimdae, el 12º punto panorámico, es un valle de unos 400 m de largo. Se encuentra rodeado de precipicios de montañas, lo que hace que el lugar se asemeje al monte Geumgangsan; por ello, suele ser llamado Sogeumgangsan, o pequeño Geumgangsan.

El agua cristalina y el precioso entorno lo convierten en un sitio imperdible. Mucha gente visita el valle Gucheondong para practicar senderismo. Los senderos comienzan en el Parque Nacional del Monte Deogyusan y llega hasta el templo Baengnyeonsa. El recorrido toma aproximadamente 3 horas de ida y vuelta, y la distancia es de aproximadamente 6 km. Pese a que son senderos de montaña, las ondulaciones no son severas, haciendo que sea ideal para el senderismo.
